The Wizard of Rondo - Emily Rodda

Leo and Mimi re-enter the world of Rondo via the musical jewellery box. The adventures begin as they attempt to evade the clutches of the Blue Queen AND solve the mystery of the disappearance of the missing wizard.
If you enjoyed  The Keys to Rondo the sequel will keep you as riveted and entertained as the first book did.

Tunnels and Deeper by Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams

I have recently read both of these - and was very impressed with the both the fast paced action of the novels and the unusual storyline of the set. The third book in the series Falling is yet to be released.

Will Burrows, main character, is drawn into the fantastic world that exists deep beneath the streets of London in an attempt to locate hos step-father. He soon discovers that the underground world he stumbles upon is both very sinister and very familiar. As he ventures deeper into the abyss he encounters many strange creatures and exiles from the world above.

This set is best suited to the more mature junior reader. I really enjoyed them - but I do enjoy science fiction!

Artemis Fowl and the Time Paradox - Eoin Colfer

For those of you who have been waiting for the latest in the series, you won't be disappointed! It is fast paced, action packed story...

Invisible City - M G Harris

Joshua Garcia is in trouble - his archaeologist father has died in a suspicious plane crash in South America, his mother is in denial and he is searching for the truth. The fluorescent cover of this book matches the fast paced action inside the pages. Science fiction, adventure with a touch of history rolled into one. I'm sure you'll love this iif you enjoyed the Alex Rider and Artemis Fowl series.

Maximum Ride - The Final Warning- James Patterson

Any of you who have read the first two in this series, will know all about Max and her flock of human/bird mutants. In the Final Warning they have the task of not just surviving against the Uber-director and his mutant army, but they must also help stop global warming. A greta read - action, science fiction and thriller rolled into one.

Then - Maurice Gleitzman

I am sure that anyone that has read Once by Gleitzman, could not help but be moved by the story of Felix and Zelda. Then follows on with their escape from the 'death train'. As the title suggests, each chapter begins with the statement 'then'. This simple narrative structure emphasises the idea of cause and event, action and consequence.

Again highly recommended, for a mature junior reader.

Check out Maurice Gleitzman's website here

Gool - Maurice Gee

The sequel to Salt, Gool follows the story of Hari and Pearl 16 years after they have defeated Ottmar and destroyed the Company's control. However a new and fearsome creature threatens the land. Hari's children race against time to save not only his life but their whole existence.

Once again Gee's powerful story telling will suit the more mature junior reader.

The Kite Runner

Twelve-year-old Amir is desperate to win the approval of his father and resolves to win the local kite-fighting tournament, to prove that he has the makings of a man. His loyal friend Hassan promises to help him for he always helps Amir, but this is 1970s Afghanistan and Hassan is merely a low-caste servant who is jeered at in the street, although Amir still feels jealous of his natural courage and the place he holds in his father's heart. But neither of the boys could foresee what would happen to Hassan on the afternoon of the tournament, which was to shatter their lives. After the Russians invade and the family is forced to flee to America, Amir realises that one day he must return, to find the one thing that his new world cannot grant him: redemption.

This was an excellent book. I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it to a more mature student, probably Y10 upwards

Very funny, very relevant (even though Australian focussed). Jamie (Jamellah) tries to keep her Lebanese culture firmly under control in order to fit into life in suburban Australia.

Noman - William Nicholson

The third in the "Noble warrior' trilogy - you must have read the first (and recently) in order to follow what goes on in this complex finale to the series.

Definitely a book for confident and mature readers - let me know what you think.

The Airman - Eoin Colfer

An tale of adventure set on a small island kingdom off the coast of England in the 1800's. A thriller, a mystery and a scientific adventure tale all rolled into one. Eoin Colfer is a great builder of characters.

What did you think of the book?
